The Wandering Angel is my painting about following an individual path. Its traveller carries light, wisdom and lived experience through a world that feels much larger than the boat. I also see the journey as an inward one: movement through our own thoughts and feelings.
Who is the wandering angel?
When I shared this painting, I described the angel as a traveller. The word points to what a person carries through life: experience, understanding and an inner source of light. That meaning matters more to me than the familiar image of a figure with wings.
The traveller follows a path even when the surrounding world seems vast. I think there is something recognisable in that scale. Beginning something new, leaving the familiar or simply trusting a personal direction can make us feel both small and very awake.
A boat held within movement
At the centre of the painting is a wooden boat, its warm tones set against blue and white. Around it, the brushwork opens out into streaks, curves and flashes of light. The contrast gives the boat a clear presence while keeping the space around it active.
You can look first at the boat, then let your eye move into the water. Returning to the centre changes the feeling again: the vessel remains a point of orientation inside the larger movement. This is a way into the image, rather than a single required interpretation.

An inward journey
I am interested in the feelings a subject can hold. The Wandering Angel can be read as travel through the world, but it can also suggest travel within a person — through memories, uncertainties and the experiences that gradually shape us.
In a later post, I reflected on the way everything we create reveals something of who we are. That thought belongs beside this painting. The traveller’s story is open enough to leave space for another person’s experience, even though it began with my own.
Seeing the painting in a different light
The accompanying Reel shows the painting outdoors, with the sea and trees around it. Watching the work move slightly in a real setting gives a different sense of its presence from a still photograph. The photograph lets you stay with the colour and composition for longer.
